If there are any who read my work I am seriously considering ending my blog since I don’t have a lot of readers. I was a loyal contributor to Gather for quite a while. While there my writing wasn’t as good not by a long shot but I had considerably more readers than I do here. It was there that my love for writing was fostered. gather suffered a sad end far before it should have. I was hoping that WordPress would be a lot like Gather but after a bit over 6 months I find that it is not. My last post only generated a minimum amount of interest sadly. I will give it one more post to see if I can generate any more interest. I sincerely hope that it does.
To my loyal readers: Thank you I am most grateful. The time that you spent reading my work is much appreciated and your comments very valued. There must be a better site to help me develop in to a more skilled writer. I hoped that WordPress would be such a place. It does not appear to be. I shall keep looking.
Respectfully,
Kevin A. Ewing

I’m so sorry to hear this. For what it’s worth, it has taken me about two years to get mine going as well as it is at the moment. So I wouldn’t give up on it just yet. It takes a while to build a faithful audience and then it starts to move along much better. Blessings, Natalie 🙂

I value your opinion ma’am. I will be posting another post by this weekend. Between my last post and my next one I will be able to tell what I want to do. I began writing an a site called Gather that died far too soon. it was a site where accomplished writers, poets and photographer who very much encouraged my development as a writer. Ever since Gather died i have been looking for a site similar to Gather.

Your kindness in responding to my post is very much appreciated. A year or two is waay too long. I am trying to develop as a writer. The feed back I am getting here is very helpful but there is not enough feedback to be helpful enough. I may however give it 3 to 6 months. A lot depends on how many will read my last post and my next one. Thank you again.

Thank you again for responding back to me. The thing is I got spoiled when I was member of a writer group called Gather. I had about 100 followers. many of them worked with me on developing my writing to a point to where writing became something that I have to do. My last post I think that I had less than 10 real responses. Thy were all kind but I miss deeper comments that my friends at Gather provided. Sadly gather died afar too soon.

WordPress lacks the sense of community that Gather.com had. Much of that is by design. Gather did just that, it gathered people of like interests together. It aspired to be a Facebook For Adults and that failed. Gather then tried to become a site for celebrity and sports gossip. That failed too.
I have been here over a year and still have yet to earn a tenth of the readership I enjoyed on Gather. WordPress is a million miles wide and a millionth of an inch thick and because of that it hard to gain traction to go anywhere.
You have to ask yourself a simple question: why do you blog?
If you blog to improve your writing skills, this is the place. You set a schedule, stick to it, write as well as you can and not worry about the audience.
If you blog to be part of a community, WordPress is a difficult place. You have to spend as much time reading and commenting on other people’s blogs as you spend on your own.
If you blog to have an impact on the world, WordPress is an even more difficult place. You will find yourself a lonely voice crying out in the wilderness.

Agreeing with Greg.
I have blogged on WP for five years, have 250 followers, and 20 or so regular readers, despite finally recognizing my writing is plenty adequate.
I don’t think, in terms of gaining readers, the forum matters. There are too few literate readers for too many literate writers, and not even a sifting mechanism to present writers/pieces/blogs to readers based upon their expressed interests and past likes (like Netflix’s “try THIS film” algorithm, bad as it may be).
But to seek writing feedback, in a huge city like L.A., an in-person group of like-minded writers is easy to find using Meet-Up. Can you use it to find a writer’s group in a larger town in Georgia and drive to meet with them weekly?

Your idea is a good idea but as a 4th grade teacher who usually works from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM It is difficult to drive the 6 hour round trip drive necessary to get to a Meet-Up in Atlanta just now, I will try during the summer months, thank you for caring enough to reply.

Good gravy.
How about using google docs to share work (easy) and skype to chat, and start your own Rural Georgian Writers meetup group? Adobe has an even better group conferencing tool. I’m the opposite of a techie, now, but Greg or others might know better free tools (I think Adobe charges for theirs) or put you in touch with others who might.
There’s a solution.

Ummm… thank YOU so much for taking the time to visit MY place. Reading your coupla’ posts today: Good example of too many engaging writers, not enough readers. If I had the time, I’d “follow” and be back. But (as Greg knows) I don’t even keep up with writing, much less posts of those already followed–except in spurts of frantic catching up. So please don’t think I don’t return because I didn’t enjoy my visit. I thoroughly enjoyed your unique style. Please give me a poke if you start that new blog, or do any piece you’re particularly proud of, and I’ll come on over again. 🙂

Would you consider resuming your role as editor? You did a fine job on Gather.com. I have not been able to spend much time with the WritingEssentials group on WordPress and am curious whether you could host the site for one day of the week?
If you are interested, email me at WritingEssential@Outlook.com
All you would have to do is write a short introduction, link to your own site and create a challenge based on your blog – just like the old days.

Sorry, I’m fairly new to following you- as of Dec. 1 I had major surgery, then was supposed to take it easy, meanwhile out of town company, birthdays, Christmas, NewYears, a new job and an Anniversary have kept me from WordPress…therefore haven’t been able to read/write as much as wanted on wordpress.
Meanwhile, I ask you to consider the following, Isn’t “1” person moved by your writing enough?
I tell myself that…I believe that. I once watched a movie where a normal everyday boy /young teen finds himself the center of a big fight between to warring future people. He asks, “Why me?” why did the bad people want to kill him.
and he was told, he would one day write a book that would inspire their (future) leader who was beating the bad guys. So the only way that the bad guys could stop him was to kill the writer of the book.
In other words, I don’t count the quantity of readers, I just hope that somehow/some way I will be an influence of good for someone somewhere , at least from time to time. Good luck in your decisions! Isn’t one person affected enough to keep going?

I have to reiterate some of what I have seen here already in the comments, which is that it takes time. It also helps to expand on your tags, it could be that you are boxing yourself in and missing your target audience.
All that said, while it is nice to have an audience, speaking for myself personally, I have never written with the intention of having readers. I write for myself, as a form of expression, a way of venting my feelings in many cases.
I was actually shocked to discover people reading and following my writing.
There are many reasons we “bloggers” write. Ulitmately, one must ask why they do it. It is always dissappointing to see another person consider giving it up, especially when I’ve only just come across their work.
Also know that just because you don’t have followers or comments, does not neccessarily mean you don’t have readers.
🙂

No one gets a lot of readers without working for them. A blogger needs to follow those that interest them, get on the reader and find people of similar interests, search in any way possible and keep up the correspondence. A writer only gets out of his site what he puts into it. Sorry you feel the need to leave.
